AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Please read the details provided in the above links, then return to this page.

HOW TO APPLY

Basic JB Audition Rules & Regulations  remain unchanged.     Please review Audition Requirements regarding memorization and other rules and the information below before applying.   If there are questions,  write to juniorbach@earthlink.net.

Auditioners are strongly urged to use our Online Registration Form.  Up to 3 additional performers (e.g. accompanist or other ensemble members) can be entered on the Online Form.  A small chamber ensemble should mail us the Downloadable Form, with personal data on Side 2 covering each extra member.   Be sure to submit the correct BWV number. Spell carefully and verify your teacher's home and email addresses.

Choirs and orchestras can also register online, listing only the total number of members and age range, and instrumentation.  However, orchestral soloists/principals, if any, must also submit personal as well as school data.    For ensembles larger than 16 members submitting recorded auditions, a CD or VHS tape and score must reach us by January 18, 2009. Mailing details will be forwarded well before then.

Online registrants should submit the $37 registration fee  via  credit card payment  through Paypal, but if problems arise, a check can be mailed to our PO Box, the standard procedure if the Downloadable Form is submitted.   Applicants submitting more than one audition will need to include separate fees for each entry.   We regret that fees are not refundable.

Submit your own performance time to the closest minute rather the duration listed on your favorite recording. Very few works exceed 20 minutes if repeats are avoided.  Entering a single piece or selected movements is always preferable to submitting several pieces not well prepared. To balance programs and to give opportunity to the greatest numbers of eligible auditioners to perform in the Festival, soloists may enter only selected portions of such extended works as the Goldberg Variations and the D Minor Violin Partita including the Chaconne.  In like manner, no ensemble can be given time to perform the entire Musical Offering or Art of Fugue.

The Schmieder (S, BWV or Anh). number for a piece can be found in most editions and recordings, online,  or in the reference volume Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, by Wolfgang Schmieder in many public libraries. If the number cannot be located, please send a photocopy of the first page of music with the Application Form for identification.

Finally, note carefully what instrumental auditions are available on which day as well as our Rehearsal and Festival dates before applying.  Members of youth music organizations in particular should check for schedule conflicts.   Marking the appropriate box on the application without further explanation should be sufficient for both audition and Festival scheduling.

Applications and registration fees must be received on or before Monday, December 1, 2008. Earlier submission will be greatly appreciated.  Please avoid using large envelopes or registered mail requiring pickup at the Post Office window.

Audition assignments will be sent by E-mail or First Class Mail early in January.
