JUNIOR BACH AUDITIONS
Auditions January 31 and February 1, 2009

Here are final instructions and reminders regarding your upcoming audition.    We hope all schedule conflicts submitted in your applications have been accommodated.    Cancellation may be the only choice if for whatever reason you cannot appear at the assigned date/time.   If you are playing with an accompanist or in an ensemble, be sure to notify all members regarding the audition date and time.

Auditions will be held in the Music Department, Morrison Hall, west of Hertz Concert Hall, at the University of California, Berkeley.  Please refer to the diagram map if unfamiliar with the campus.

Campus parking lots are marked with a  P (click map to enlarge).

Fees vary depending on the location.   The lot closest to Morrison under the tennis court opposite the Berkeley Art Museum is unfortunately the most expensive at $3 the first hour, $5/2 hrs, etc, and is often reserved for UC events, whereas the rate at most other UC sites is only $1/hour.  Lotmachines accept bills but do not give change.  The lot adjacent to Boalt Law School is approached from Piedmont Ave across from the stadium. Campus lots are no longer free on Sundays, but street parking is.  With luck, 2-hour metered street parking may be found on Saturday further down on Bancroft and nearby streets.   Other parking sites include the M L King Student Union garage, City public parking on Durant west of Telegraph.   From the downtown Berkeley BART station, allow 20 minutes’ walk to Morrison.

Checking in at least 30 minutes ahead of the stated time will assure you a bit of warm-up time in a practice room.  Casual dress is fine, but note that judges for the vocal panel will not be behind screens.   Auditions are held in small groups called panels lasting 20 to 50 minutes, total duration depending on the age and number of participants as well as the length of pieces, the estimated panel durations are posted below (click) and will also be posted at our January 6th Orientation Reception at MusicSources.  All students in your panel will enter the audition room together and perform in turn for one another.    A room monitor will be in attendance to assist you.    Waiting space will be provided for parents, as most audition rooms are too small to accommodate them.

Reminders: Do not take repeats unless ornamented differently.  However, Da Capo of movements such as Gavotte I and Bourree I should be part of the performance.   Because of time constraints, judges may ask you to stop or proceed to the next movement, but this is not an indication of acceptance or rejection.    Except for organists and harpsichordists, all soloists must perform from memory.    Accompanists and ensembles, including duo or triosonatas, as well as principals of duo or triple concerti, may use scores.

Results will be mailed to you by February 10th, with judges’ comments sent to your teacher at the same time.  We thank you for your participation and hope that your audition will be a rewarding educational experience.    See you on Saturday the 26th or Sunday the 27th!
